Step I: Cleanse
Today's cleansers are a sophisticated bunch as they not only remove the day's grime and build up of oil but can also provide tangible, long-lasting benefits. This wasn't always the case. There was a time when the only option for cleansing the facial skin was a bar of soap, anyone who's suffered from terribly dry skin can attest to how harsh soaps are. Moisturizing bars came next, and they were a big improvement over traditional soap, as they cleansed without stripping the skin.
As for what type of cleanser you should choose, this depends on a number of factors. Someone with sensitive skin would do well to use a cleanser that is chock-full of ingredients like green tea and other botanicals. Someone with dry skin should opt for a creamy cleanser that has very little foaming action. Likewise, someone with oil skin will do well with foaming cleanser, and if you're fortunate to have normal skin you can use pretty much anything.
Cleansing twice a day is ideal, but if you absolutely cannot clean more than once daily, most experts recommend doing it at night. It's been said a million times-but going to sleep with a face full of makeup is an open invitation to breakouts and dull skin. Put your best face forward by cleansing with a gentle, yet effective skin solution daily.
